The first priority for survival in Minecraft is to find shelter and food. Instead of killing all the animals in the vicinity, a more reliable plan and method is to start farming. Setting up a farm can take some time, but since it can feed both the player’s animals and those of the neighboring animals, thus providing more livestock.

Although the process is quite simple, there are many small mechanisms used to successfully grow crops. Just like in real life, a lot of things have to be arranged in order for the player to get the most out of his farm and get the maximum yield. Once you’ve got yourself some water, lots of seeds, and basic hoe tools, you can start setting up your perfect farm with the following Minecraft farming guide.

All types of plants can be grown

There are many types of plants that can be grown in Minecraft, but this article will focus only on the most important and versatile: wheat, potatoes, carrots and beets. Due to the importance of animal husbandry, wheat and carrots are the crops that players should grow first to survive.

Here are all the plants that can be grown in the game and where they can be found, as well as how to grow them.

Carrots and beets

  • Wheat: weeding to find seeds, planting in the field.
  • Carrots: found in villages and shipwrecks, grown on farmland.
  • Potatoes: found in villages and shipwrecks, grown on farmland.
  • Beetroot: found in the village, mineshaft chests and End City chests. Planted on agricultural land.
Bamboo

  • Pumpkin: found in mineshaft chests, in plains and forest biomes, plant on farmland with an empty block next to it to grow.
  • Melons: found in mine chests, forest biomes and savanna villages, planted on farmland with an empty block next to it to grow.
  • Sugarcane: found near water, most common in desert biomes, planted in sand right next to water.

Ideal soil

To grow the 4 basic crops (carrots, potatoes, wheat and sugar beets), the player will need to till the soil. First, choose an ideal location for your new farm, especially near a water source.

The ideal potting ground should be fenced off, or at least not allow anyone or anything to access the area but yourself. If mobs are allowed to enter the field, they will most likely trample on growing crops.

Furthermore, make sure that everyone can reach their farmland easily without having to jump or fall down any blocks, as this will cause the seeds to be discarded.

Good soil also means finding a good biome. Temperate biomes like forests and plains are great places to grow crops, and plants will even grow in biomes like deserts and badlands, as long as there’s water nearby.

However, with cold biomes, the water in the farms tends to turn into ice. To prevent this from happening, make sure to place the wooden boards above the water blocks. This will allow the water to be kept as a liquid and the farm will not dry out.

The role of water

Water is the most important factor in plant growth. For bare soil to be tilled, water needs to be near it with up to 4 blocks horizontally or vertically on the same height, or one block above.

The player can dry the farm by tilling the soil and quickly sowing seeds. However, this is very inefficient and not recommended for best results. However, if you are looking to exist in an alternate dimension like the Nether, this is very good.

The state of the water doesn’t matter, so even if the water flows, any block within range can still be plowed and planted on. Since it’s difficult to create a water surface without a bucket (this is a rare item), gamers can dig a small path from a river or beach to reroute the water to their farm.

Light level

Light is another very important factor for plant growth. To achieve ideal growing conditions, plants should be in a place with 9 or more light, at least during the day.

To grow crops even faster, people should place torches or other lighting blocks near the farm. This will help them to continue to grow at night, even when the natural light is below 9. To check the light level in a particular area, press the key. F3 to open the debug screen.
